Electric hot water systems

Electric hot water systems continue to be the most widely used hot water units in Australian homes and have been produced domestically for over a century. Although the basic technology remains similar, contemporary models use better-quality materials and thicker, denser insulation around the storage cylinder. That improved insulation reduces heat loss and keeps water hotter for longer, making modern systems more efficient than pre-2000 units. These systems function much like a kettle, using an electric heating element, and in Queensland are typically offered in three main power ratings: 1.8kW, 2.4kW and 3.6kW (with a small number of 4.8kW units in areas that can support the higher load). This sizing is common across established brands such as Rheem, Dux, Vulcan, AquaMAX and Rinnai. Bear in mind that element size does not alter the total energy required to heat a given volume of water. For example, a 1.8kW element draws half the power of a 3.6kW element but will take roughly twice as long to raise the same amount of water to the same temperature. Most electric hot water systems are built with mild steel tanks that have a vitreous enamel lining and are protected by a sacrificial anode; stainless steel tanks are also available. Older copper-style water heaters are no longer manufactured. Gympie Hot Water supplies and installs dependable electric hot water systems, and our Gympie plumber team can assist with installation, repairs and advice on gas and electric hot water systems to meet every household’s needs.

An electric water heater system

An electric hot water system can make up roughly one-third of your electricity costs if you don’t have PV solar exporting to the grid. Tariff 11, which provides standard-rate power 24 hours a day for general lighting and appliances, attracts higher charges. Systems on tariff 33 run for about 18 hours each day, commonly cutting out between 6–9am and 6–9pm. Tariff 31 is the lowest-cost option, supplying electricity only during off-peak hours, typically from 9pm to 6am. Keep in mind that tariff 31 is usually unsuitable for hot water cylinders smaller than 250 litres when the household has two or more occupants. Electric hot water systems come in a broad selection of storage sizes, from compact 25-litre units for a single sink or kitchenette to large 400-litre tanks for bigger homes. The following is a general sizing guide (actual needs vary with usage): 50L & 80L: Best for 1–2 people in small units. These sizes generally operate only on tariff 11 and aren’t appropriate for off-peak tariffs. 125L: Suited to 2–3 people in a unit or small townhouse when installed on tariff 33. 160L: Good for 2–4 people in a unit or small townhouse on tariff 33. 250L: Works for 2–4 people on tariff 31 in many three-bedroom homes, and can serve up to 6 people on tariff 33. 315L: Appropriate for 3–5 people on tariff 31, or up to 7 people on tariff 33. 400L: Ideal for 4–7 people on tariff 31, up to 9 people on tariff 33, and as many as 12 people on tariff 11. Gympie Hot Water can advise on the right hot water systems, installation and tariff arrangements — including gas and electric options — to deliver dependable hot water while helping reduce your energy bills. If you need repairs or a new installation, our Gympie plumber team is ready to help.
