Electric hot water heaters
Electric hot water systems offer a cost-effective, dependable option for households, ensuring a steady flow of hot water. Gympie Hot Water provides straightforward, efficient electric hot water installation and service with reliable results.
Electric hot water systems
Electric hot water systems are still the predominant type of domestic hot water unit across Australian homes and have been produced locally for more than a century. While the basic technology remains similar, contemporary models incorporate better materials and thicker, denser insulation around the storage tanks. This greater insulation keeps heat for longer, cutting heat loss and raising efficiency compared with units made prior to 2000.
These units work much like a kettle, using an electric heating element, and are commonly offered in three main power ratings for the Queensland market: 1.8kW, 2.4kW and 3.6kW (with a small number of 4.8kW models in limited areas due to higher supply requirements). This sizing is standard across major brands such as Rheem, Dux, Vulcan, AquaMAX and Rinnai.
It’s worth noting that different element ratings don’t alter the overall energy consumption. For example, a 1.8kW element uses half the power of a 3.6kW element but will take roughly twice as long to heat the same volume of water to the same temperature.
Most electric systems are built with mild steel tanks coated internally with vitreous enamel and protected by a sacrificial anode; stainless steel tank options are also available. Older copper-style water heaters are no longer manufactured.
Gympie Hot Water supplies and installs dependable electric hot water systems, offering installation and repairs for households across the Gympie area, with options for gas and electric systems and service by an experienced Gympie plumber.

I found SunCity Hot Water on google after a friend told me they had used them. I rang for a call-out and as it was Friday they said they could not do it till Monday. Replaced and relocated electric hot water system with a heat pump at a competitive price.
Sun City Hot Water did a fantastic job. Were very easy to deal with from quote to finish. Took the time to understand what I wanted and explain how existing plumbing needed to be modified to relocate. On installation day they phoned ahead (always appreciated) and reconfirmed new placement etc before starting. Work was very neat and professional. Made sure that everything was working and cleaned up before leaving.

An electric hot water unit
An electric hot water system can represent about one-third of your electricity costs if you don’t have PV solar exporting to the grid. Tariff 11, which supplies power 24 hours a day at the standard rate used for general power and lighting, leads to higher running costs. If your unit is on tariff 33 it typically runs for roughly 18 hours a day, usually turning off between about 6–9am and 6–9pm. Tariff 31, the most economical option, provides power only during off-peak periods, generally from around 9pm to 6am.
Bear in mind that tariff 31 is usually unsuitable for hot water cylinders under 250 litres when the household has two or more occupants.
Electric hot water units come in many storage sizes, from compact 25-litre models for kitchens and single basins to large 400-litre tanks for bigger families. The following is a general guide to tank capacities and typical household suitability (actual needs will depend on your hot water usage):
50L & 80L: Best for 1–2 people in small units. These sizes are intended for tariff 11 and aren’t appropriate for off-peak tariffs.
125L: Suits 2–3 people in a unit or small townhouse when on tariff 33.
160L: Suitable for 2–4 people in a unit or small townhouse when connected to tariff 33.
250L: Works for 2–4 people on tariff 31 in most three-bedroom homes, and can serve up to 6 people on tariff 33.
315L: Suitable for 3–5 people on tariff 31, or up to 7 people on tariff 33.
400L: Ideal for 4–7 people on tariff 31, up to 9 people on tariff 33, and up to 12 people on tariff 11.

Rheem
Read More
Rheem is one of the most recognised names in hot water, renowned worldwide for durable products and supported by one of the industry’s largest marketing efforts.
Across Australia, Rheem produces a variety of electric hot water systems:
Mild steel vitreous enamel (VE) models are manufactured in Sydney
Stainless steel units are produced in Melbourne at the former AquaMAX facility
Under the Rheem umbrella you’ll also find other well-known domestic hot water labels such as AquaMAX, Vulcan and Solahart.
Warranty periods vary from 5 to 12 years depending on tank size and construction. To retain warranty validity and maximise the lifespan of your hot water unit, servicing is necessary at least every five years. Servicing should include replacing the sacrificial anode on vitreous enamel tanks, and it’s advisable to replace the pressure and temperature relief valve at service time.
At Gympie Hot Water we commonly recommend Rheem for Gympie plumbers and homeowners because of their proven reliability, extensive product range and the confidence that comes with a leading name in hot water systems, including gas and electric options, plus installation and repairs.
AquaMAX
Read More
The AquaMAX brand has been established since 1988; originally a family-owned company, it was acquired by Rheem in 2009 after selling more than 500,000 electric hot water units.
AquaMAX has long been recognised within the industry for reliable quality, particularly for its stainless steel water heaters.
Their stainless steel models continue to be manufactured in Victoria, while the VE mild steel electric hot water range is produced at Rheem’s Sydney facility.
AquaMAX cylinders carry warranties ranging from seven to ten years depending on the tank capacity — smaller cylinders generally have shorter warranty terms.
A service is recommended before the five-year mark, including replacing the sacrificial anode, to extend the life of the tank.
Vulcan
Read More
Vulcan is a well-regarded hot water range produced by Rheem, offering an economical option within Rheem’s lineup. Positioned as Rheem’s budget-conscious series, Vulcan provides reliable hot water systems without a hefty price tag. Vulcan’s electric storage units use mild steel with a vitreous enamel lining, engineered to perform dependably in Australian households. Warranty details: 7 years for the 50L electric storage model; 10 years for capacities from 80L up to 400L. To prolong the life of the cylinder, the sacrificial anode should be replaced around years 4–5 of operation. Carrying out this simple service protects the tank from corrosion and helps you get the most from the system. At Gympie Hot Water, our Gympie plumbers recommend Vulcan hot water systems as a cost-effective, reliable choice for installation and repairs, backed by Rheem’s manufacturing quality.
Rinnai
Read More
Rinnai has long been regarded as a frontrunner in gas hot water, and until recently its electric range was either imported from China or built by Dux in NSW. Rinnai now operates its own manufacturing facility in Victoria, producing the Hotflo electric hot water systems here in Australia.
The Rinnai electric lineup includes everything from space-saving 25 litre units (perfect for kitchenettes or tight areas) through to 400 litre tanks suited to larger homes. Warranty: 7 years on 25L and 50L models, 10 years on all larger sizes. Note: to keep the warranty valid, a service is required every five years (or sooner). At Gympie Hot Water, our Gympie plumbers supply and install Rinnai systems because of their dependable performance, energy efficiency and the assurance of Australian-made quality for hot water system installation and repairs, both gas and electric.

Dux electric hot water units use mild steel cylinders with vitreous enamel linings, providing robust performance for homes of varying sizes. Most models are produced in Moss Vale, NSW, and tank capacities span from compact 25 litre units up to 400 litre systems. Warranty periods depend on capacity: 7 years on the cylinders of the 25L and 50L models, and 10 years for larger tanks. At Gympie Hot Water, we endorse Dux hot water systems for their consistent reliability and stock a broad selection so a Gympie plumber can install the correct system for your home without unnecessary delay.
Thermann
Read More
Thermann is sold exclusively through the Reece Plumbing Supplies network, with its electric hot water units produced by Dux. Built from mild steel and lined internally with vitreous enamel, Thermann tanks include a sacrificial anode to guard against corrosion. That anode should be replaced within five years to help the system achieve its expected service life. Thermann electric hot water systems carry the same warranty terms as the Dux Proflo lineup: seven years for 25L and 50L models, and ten years for larger capacities. At Gympie Hot Water, we hold Thermann water heaters in high regard for their dependable performance and solid build quality.
